We need just a network monitoring tool for doing this. Few such free tool is ethereal, wire shark. Here I am using Wireshark tool. let as assume a user had logged in and started to chat with his friend in yahoo messenger. Another user in the network is using the wireshark tool and he is sniffing the packets from yahoo messenger, to do this he just need to change the protocol type to"ymgs" in the filter now it will filter only the ymsg protocol. Click on the first packet and right click to see"follow tcp stream" and click on it. You will get a window with all the packets which is in "ymsg" now look for the username of the user who is chatting and find the text they have typed.
Now the attacker who reads this message can interact with the unknown user as if he is one of his friend just by gathering the information from the previous chat which is sniffed by the attacker.
